Situated in Haseo-ri and Suryeom-ri, Yangnam-myeon, Gyeongju, atop a hill overlooking the sea, lies the Hyundai Motor Group Global Partnership Center And University Gyeongju Campus. This architectural marvel, crafted by Hyunjun Mihn and MPART Architects, embodies a fusion of traditional and functional design elements, serving as a hub for both corporate training and serene retreat.

Architectural Inspiration and Layout

Drawing inspiration from monasteries and functional architecture, the design team aimed to strike a balance between dynamism and tranquility. The campus comprises two training center buildings arranged in a ㄱ, ㄴ shape, forming a ㅁ shape with shared public space enclosed within. The topography influenced the placement of the University Gyeongju Campus and Global Partnership Center on different levels, adding diversity to the layout. The structure utilizes a mega-truss system for stability and flexibility.

Innovative Features and Spatial Planning

To reflect Hyundai’s pioneering spirit, a column-free piloti space resembling a bridge spans 50m, offering panoramic views of Gyeongju’s mountains and Ulsan’s coastline. The interior space mirrors the urban character of the exterior, with adaptable lighting enhancing ambiance throughout the day. Versatile training rooms cater to various educational needs, featuring classroom setups, amphitheaters, and modular spaces to accommodate different teaching methods and group sizes.

Paradigmatic Spaces and Symbolic Structures

The Gyeongju Hall and Partnership Hall serve as educational and exhibition venues, with the former envisioned as an archive space and the latter as a platform for business events. The northwest corner symbolizes the company’s genesis, with a supporting structure anchoring the two training centers. Conversely, the southeast corner extends as a cantilever towards the sea, epitomizing a vision of boundless potential and relaxation amidst the scenic backdrop.

Adaptive Utilization Amidst Challenges

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the University Gyeongju Campus serves as a vital COVID-19 Daily Life Protection Center for the Daegu area. Simultaneously, the Global Partnership Center remains committed to its training endeavors, fostering collaborations and enhancing relations between conglomerates and their partners on a national scale.

In essence, the Hyundai Motor Group Global Partnership Center And University Gyeongju Campus stands as a testament to architectural innovation and adaptability, seamlessly blending tradition with modernity to create a harmonious environment conducive to learning and growth.
